When the COVID-19 pandemic first arrived in the United States a year ago, many of us never suspected that we would still be dealing with it in 2021. As we struggle to get the virus under control, it has become clear that we will have to continue to take measures to prevent community spread. This includes changing our traditional Walk a Mile in Their His Her Our Shoes format so that every member of our community can participate virtually.
So How Will the 2021 Walk Work?
The great thing about our 2021 Walk event is that you get to pick where to do it. You can register now, and then between April 7 and 10, you can choose your own mile-long course, what time you start, along with your walking partners.
Our 2021 Walk is free (although we encourage you to donate $5 or more if you are able to do so). Everyone who registers for the Walk will be automatically entered into a raffle, where they will have a chance to win one of the following prizes: a $250 gift card, a $100 gift card (2), or a $50 gift card (3)!
We have put together a list of 5 trails around Westmoreland County where you can walk a mile. You can also pick a favorite spot of your own (including your own neighborhood). A mile is the equivalent of 2,000 steps, so you can walk your mile wherever and whenever you want!
Beyond the Walk, we are hosting a range of virtual activities to make sure that everyone can participate. The activities include:
Pledging to do something tangible to end gender-based violence.
Sending a selfie, team photo, video, TikTok, Instagram, etc. of your participation, with the hashtag #WalkBlackburn
Taking a quiz
Completing a word search
Completing a crossword puzzle
Completing a coloring page
Experiencing a “Perspectives” activity with your friends or family
Sharing your vision of a community free from gender-based violence, in whatever medium you prefer (visual arts, performing arts, or even writing a short story or poem)
Watching our Empathy Series with a child or children in your life
Even if you can’t do the Walk, we encourage you to register and do one or more activities to help us show all of Westmoreland County just how important the movement to end gender-based violence is to you.
Why Should I Participate?
There are so many reasons to participate in our 2021 Walk a Mile in Their His Her Our Shoes event. Over the past decade, thousands of people have shown up in downtown Greensburg and committed to doing their part to end gender-based violence. At its core, our Walk is about raising awareness about domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of violence and abuse. It is also an opportunity to learn about how each of us can make a difference.
Although our Walk is virtual this year, the reasons to support it remain the same. You may choose to participate because you:
Want to show your commitment to the cause of ending gender-based violence;
Have an interest in learning more about what can be done to end this type of violence;
Have been touched by gender-based violence, either personally or through a loved one;
Want to put together a team and get bragging rights for having the biggest team or raising the most money;
Want to be part of making this the biggest Walk ever; or
Want to have a safe virtual event to look forward to in the coming months!
These are just some reasons why you should participate. With free registration and a chance to win a prize, there is no reason NOT to participate our 2021 Walk!
